Da-Jiang Innovations, or simply DJI, as it is better known to us, is currently the largest manufacturer of unmanned aerial vehicles or drones in the world, with a market share of approximately 70%. And despite its dominance in the industry, the Shenzhen-based tech company has never attempted to tap into the first-person-view drone segment. However, for the first time in its 15-year history, DJI is changing that with the DJI FPV drone.
DJI has introduced a new drone – DJI FPV. It also offers a hybrid of the traditional first-person-view and cinematic camera experience GPS, obstacle avoidance sensors, ability to hover in place, emergency braking and return home. Reception is also included ADS-B system to warn of nearby flying objects.
“DJI is redefining what drones are capable of. And as we celebrate our 15th anniversary this year, we want to honor that legacy of innovation by redefining what flight is possible with DJI FPV.” he said Ferdinand Wolf, creative director for DJI Europe. “Flying out of the box, the DJI FPV combines the best hybrid drone technology available. It can fly like a racer, hover like a traditional drone, accelerate like a homemade project, and stop faster than any other drone. DJI FPV allows the world to experience the thrill of drone flight without being intimidated by technology or spending hours building a system from scratch. We can't wait for the world to try it.”
1/2.3-inch sensor camera with 12MP and with 150-degree field of view (FOV) is mounted on a uniaxial base. It can capture snapshots 4K/60p or 1080p/120p and up to 4 times slower footage. Photos and videos can be taken in the same year. DJI uses electronic image stabilization rocksteady, thus preventing the footage from being destroyed when the drone is flying at high speed. The system is equipped with DJI technology OcuSync 3.0, which enables 10 km range, dual frequencies and a transmission speed of 50 Mbps.
DJI's FPV product ecosystem includes drone, remote control, FPV Goggles V2 and a motion controller that allows the drone mimics the movement of your hand. Through the goggles, users can see what the drone is seeing in near real-time with high resolution and low latency.
You can watch the flight in different ways: in standard HD mode with low latency, in a mode where you activate high frame rates for a more cinematic look, to delay the signal, and in audience mode, where you connect up to eight additional glasses.
There are also three different modes of flight depending on skill level.
The usual way allows pilots to operate if all obstacle detection sensors are activated. The drone will automatically slow down or stop before it can hit an object. In this mode, the maximum speed is 50 km/h.
Sports mode it offers some dynamic movement options, along with some key safety features. It will still hover in place, but the obstacle avoidance sensors will not activate. The drone can travel up to 97 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in two seconds.
Manual mode is the most advanced mode and is only recommended once you are familiar with the DJI FPV drone. Hover and obstacle avoidance sensors are disabled, although the emergency braking function still works. DJI thus created the Virtual Flight app to help pilots prepare for this mode, which allows you to turn and rotate the drone. The maximum speed in this case is 140 km/h.
There are several options for purchasing a DJI FPV drone. A standard FPV combo is available for 1,349 euros and includes the drone, 2 remote controls, FPV V2 goggles and one Intelligent Flight battery. The Fly More kit includes two additional Intelligent Flight batteries and a dedicated charging station (you will have to pay extra for 279 euros). The motion controller is sold separately at a price of 149 euros.
