On March 8, Women's Day: Here's a list of must-see films by female directors!

March 8th is coming up and it's time to celebrate all those women who are fighting for their voices and who are creating and showing us unique, feminine stories that can inspire us to start standing up for ourselves!

Among the women who can be your role models, there are certainly women from your immediate surroundings, as well as those you do not know personally. Some of the latter certainly are female film directors, which is still a predominantly male job – even though there is no reason for it to be. They are the ones who give us hope that women's voices will be heard and that stories told from a woman's perspective will be expressed and reach the audiences that are eagerly waiting for them. Ahead of Women's Day on March 8, we've compiled a list of six great female directors and their achievements that you shouldn't miss.

Promising Young Woman (2020) - Emerald Fennel

This is a film that you should definitely not miss as a woman. It was directed by Emerald Fennel, a director, actress and screenwriter who co-wrote the screenplay for the famous series Killing Eve, created by another great screenwriter and actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge. It stars Carey Mulligan - and it's safe to say that it might be one of her best roles to date. The film is a brilliantly shot, comic thriller story about a young woman who in a unique way copes with the patriarchal society and the injustice done to her long ago. This film creatively exposes all the mistakes and stereotypes of the society in which we live as women and challenges the view of what men are allowed and what women consider evil.

Smart Girls (Booksmart, 2019) - Olivia Wilde

This movie is a great coming-of-age story and two teenage best friends finding each other and thinking about their plans for the future. Directed by actress Olivia Wilde, this is her directorial debut - and honestly, we can't wait to see some of her next achievements. This is one of the most honest films that shows what it's really like to grow up and what girls face in the most sensitive period of their lives called middle school. We really think this movie is worth every minute of watching.

About people and villages (Faces Places, 2017) - Agnès Varda

Agnès Varda is one of the most famous directors in the world and one of the pioneers of the famous French New Wave in film. She was also one of the first to honor the famous actor Gérard Depardieu in her film, and without her, French cinema would not be what it is today, nor would it have the same reputation. Agnès dedicated her life to the seventh art and directed until her death. She came up with many new ideas and approaches to directing, and the film we recommend is the documentary About People and Villages, in which we get to know her, him and rural France through her acquaintance with the photographer JR.

The Beguiled (2017) - Sofia Coppola

Of course, the list of famous female directors must also include the excellent Sofia Coppola, known for her extraordinary achievements, filmed from a gentle, feminine point of view. It was really difficult to choose just one of her films to recommend to you, as she has several great achievements behind her, such as The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette, but this time you we recommend one of her more recent works, Fooled. This historical drama/thriller introduces us to three great female characters, Martha, Edwina and Alicia - and their struggle to get what they want at any cost.

Lady Bird (2017) - Greta Gerwig

If you haven't heard of Greta before, you've probably already heard of one of her latest films, Little Women (2019), which has received many positive reviews since its release. She portrayed this famous novel by Louise May Alcott in a unique way and gave depth to every female character in this story. However, we decided to take this opportunity to introduce you to one of her previous achievements - and that is the award-winning film Lady Bird. This film is a unique story about growing up and accepting yourself, and the main role in it went to actress Saoirse Ronan.

Wonder Woman (2017) – Patty Jenkins

And, of course, among female directors, we must also leave room for the incredible Patty Jenkins, she resurrected one of the most famous heroes of comics - Wonder Woman. The main role in this film, as we already know, went to Gal Gadot, who not only perfectly portrayed the character, but also showed with her behavior that she is Wonder Woman in everyday life. Honestly, a lot of girls have looked up to Wonder Woman since this movie came out because she showed them that heroes aren't just reserved for boys. We look forward to the other films that Patty will direct, and we hope that the "wonder women" will appear there as well.
