In 2023, turbulence forecasters collected and analyzed extensive data on flight paths around the world. The results revealed which routes were the most turbulent and uncomfortable for passengers. In this article, we will explore where pilots and passengers faced the most challenging conditions in the air. If you're interested in air travel or just want to know which routes might be better to avoid, read on to find out which flight routes caused the most inconvenience in 2023.

Are you wondering which are the flight routes with the most turbulence? Then check Turbli's turbulence forecast website listing. In light of recent incidents where turbulence has also claimed a fatality and a range of injuries, it might make sense to check which flights experience the most turbulence.

Turbulence is usually annoying, but rarely as dangerous as on a recent flight from London to Singapore. They are caused by a variety of factors, including atmospheric wind patterns, the wake of other aircraft, and the “mechanical turbulence” that is common when traveling over mountains.

Turbli, a turbulence forecasting website, used existing data to analyze more than 150,000 long-haul and short-haul flight records from 2023. The EDR measures the intensity of turbulence at a given location on a scale of 0 to 100, creating a list of the most turbulent flights .

Air routes with the most turbulence

The most turbulent are flights between Santiago, Chile and Santa Cruz, Bolivia, with an average EDR of 17.5. This is followed by a flight between Alamty, Kazakhstan and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and a flight between Lanzhou and Chengdu, China.

The route between Milan and Geneva is the most turbulent in Europe (16.3 EDR), closely followed by the flight from Milan to Zurich.
