With the presentation of its Cybertruck, Tesla opened a new chapter in the history of electric vehicles. With its innovative accessories such as the range extender, the Cybertruck not only pushes the boundaries of technological progress, but also sets new benchmarks for the future of electric mobility. At the same time, it promises 500 miles of range, and so far it lives up to that promise.
After several delays - including due to the COVID crisis and semiconductor shortages - Tesla has finally started delivering its Cybertrucks to customers, revealing some surprising innovations in the process. Among them is the option of extending the range, which represents a compromise between the originally promised 500 miles of range and the reality that customers experience in 2023. So all CytberTruck buyers will be able to add a battery of about 50 kWh to the space under the box of the semi-truck.
The longest-range version, the mid-range all-wheel-drive Cybertruck, will cost $79,990, which is comparable to the originally announced price for 500 mile version. If we don't take into account inflation and changed manufacturing circumstances, and the fact that all cars have increased in price by 20 percent since 2019. So this model only offers 340 miles of range. Interestingly, Cybertruck's website mentions an ingenious solution for increasing range: an additional battery that can add 120 miles of range to the Cyberbeast model, while adding 130 miles to the AWD model. This increases the total potential driving range to 470 miles.
Drew Baglino, Tesla's vice president of powertrains and power engineering confirmed that this range extender is a "toolbox-like battery" located in the cargo area just aft behind the cabin. This addition takes up more than a third of the cargo space, which was also confirmed by Elon Musk.
Tesla has yet to reveal the official price or weight of this add-on, nor whether it is a permanent installation. A battery capable of providing that much extra range is expected to be quite heavy and may not be easily removable. The value of this add-on would depend on the use of the vehicle - for those who intend to use the Cybertruck more as a means of transportation for people, this option might make sense, while for towing needs it would be very useful.
The Tesla Cybertruck, with its additional range extension, opens up new possibilities for electric vehicle users. With this innovation, Tesla not only fulfills the promise of greater range, but also points to the future development of electric vehicles. With an additional battery, the Cybertruck becomes even more flexible and useful for a variety of needs, from long trips to everyday use.
