How to choose the right smartphone in 2020?

Can't you dream of how to choose the right smartphone that best suits your needs? Do you feel confused when you step in front of a smartphone dealer and really don't know what to choose? Ask yourself the right questions and choose the smartphone that will serve you best in 2020! Choose the best smartphone for you!

Choosing the right smartphone is a maze of questions and sub-questions and really depends on individual needs. If your smartphone is already replaced the camera and you take practically all of your photos with it, you need to choose the one that offers you a lot in this area. On the other hand: if you spend most of your time "watching" media content and video and you ignore the existence of television, you should not skimp on the screen, because in it you watch practically all day long. And finally, if your "screen time", i.e. looking at the screen, is more than 5 hours a day, you should never forget about battery capacity. This must be yours"timing” and phone abuse simply endure. But that's just it basic flowers – let's go in order!

In this record we will study your needs and get on based on questions, which you will pledge to yourself, get to selection of ideal candidates, i.e. smartphones that will fully satisfy your smartphone needs.

  • Which ecosystem do you currently live in and are you ready to switch – iOS vs. Android?
  • Have you ever broken your smartphone or its screen?
  • Have you ever dropped your smartphone in water and ruined it?
  • Is your smartphone the only camera you use to create photos and videos?
  •  How much time do you spend a day on your smartphone?
  •  Do you play games with your smartphone?
  •  How important is the price of a smartphone to you?

The above questions are essential; if you set them before buying a new phone, you will be able to eliminate candidates that may not meet your real needs. In the end, you will come to a candidate, next to which you can make the ticks yourself. Lets go!

1. Choice of operating system and ecosystem of devices and applications - iOS vs. Android

What to choose?! iOS vs Android
What to choose?! iOS vs. Android…

If you have always been a user Apple devices and live in Apple's ecosystem (computer, watch, telephone), then there is no way, to cross over to the other side and your choice is limited to devices AppleApple's app ecosystem, cloud services and "archives", if you use them in their entirety Apple's device, made really perfectly and tailored to the needs of the user. But the fact that, for example, in Slovenia you won't have apps like it available NLB Pay, because you Apple does not support Apple only supports Apple Pay, with which the majority of Slovenian banks have not yet reached an agreement. Therefore, contactless payment with a phone or smart watch is no longer required. Unless you join the service Revolution, N21 ... and you somehow transfer your banking "abroad" today.

So in a way you are left with Android, which in recent years is really becoming a very "complete" and flexible "operating system", which phone manufacturers successfully "adapt" to their devices with more or less accidental conversions. Of course, it connects perfectly with Google applications, and if you use Gmail and with it Google Drive, Calendar, Documents, Spreadsheets..., you are on the right track - then choosing Android is definitely a better solution. Before you choose iOS or Android, but definitely check whether the first or the second supports all your most used applications and whether they are, for example, in iOS even available and how they work. Particular Google's applications namely in iOS they do much worse than on Android, as Google is not overly enthusiastic about developing them to such a level of detail as for Android, which is its own operating system.

2. Damage resistance of your phone

Statistically speaking, less than half of smartphones experience an accident!
Statistically speaking, less than half of smartphones experience an accident!

Each of us has broken a smartphone before. Regardless of whether you bought a cover and a protective glass for it. Statistically speaking, during their lifetime "fatal" damages as much as 45 percent of all phones. Also because some are more susceptible to injury than others. Here we are mainly referring to phones with rounded edges of the screens, which due to exposure of this edge, statistically speaking, are more likely to experience a bitter end than those who have screen sunk into the frame of the phone. Besides, it is protection of the rounded edges of phones extremely problematic, because the protective glasses – even the one above 50 euros – they often give in and withdraw. Therefore, such phones are by no means for the faint of heart. So you always have to look at it from your perspective and think about what your personal experience with injuries is. If you are exceptional "canopy" and you break any phone, you should consider the likelihood that this will happen to a new phone before you buy it. And be sure to secure your phone. All operators offer this service and I recommend it for all purchases over 500 euros, i.e. for slightly more expensive phones. Or simply select your phone, which is basically made to be more durable: it uses glass Gorilla glass at least level 5 strength and has IP68 standard, which also results in a more "compact" construction of the smartphone. Water resistance and resistance to sand, dust and the like can contribute to a better "general" durability of the smartphone and, as a result, a stronger construction.

3. IP-standard - water resistance

Has it ever fallen into the water?
Have you ever dropped it in the water?

There is nothing sadder than looking at your phone Toilet bowls. Or to the phone in the washing machine. Has this ever happened to you?! Well, and if you have a habit spill coffee on the phone (most phones survive this now) or have an accident with it in the summer swim in a nearby lake, be careful to choose a phone that is waterproof. These standards can be read at length online, so I won't go into detail. Maybe just to check if the phone has this standard. Many manufacturers, especially Chinese ones, do not want to pay for this standard and do not submit their phones to be tested - despite this, they are "quite" waterproof. But anyway. If you have the option to buy a phone that has this standard, I really don't see why you would buy one that does not have this standard.

4. Has your phone become your only camera?!

Do you only take photos with your smartphone?!
Do you only take photos with your smartphone?!

If you answered yes, it is the answer is pretty clear. You need to reach for the phone that is in this area simply good. And here those phones from the truly "premium" class are really good. So "flagships". However, you can definitely find a mid-range phone that perfectly fulfills the role of your "first" camera. I personally suggest that you check out the controversial research DXOMark, which serves up a pretty good technical insight and smartphone camera review. The latter is disputed by many, but the assessment is still true in a way. Telephones, which are highly rated here, generally take good photos. Of course, check the rating of your sebek camera. Sometimes this one is even more important than the one behind. And if video is important to you, you should definitely check this out too! Then many times the best choice is right iPhone, which is not an absolute winner in many other situations. When it comes to video, however, it has no real competition. This is also why it is the one and only choice of real videographers.

6. Are you on the phone for more than 4 hours a day?!

Watching the series on your phone?! Are you on your phone screen for more than 4 hours?
Watching soap operas on your phone?! Do you stare at your phone screen for more than 4 hours a day?

Check your phone's usage patterns under your phone's settings. How much time do you spend on social networks, how long while watching a video. And if you approached 4 hours a day, you need a phone with large battery and economical processor – i.e. processors of the latest generation. Of course, battery usage is also decisively influenced by the size and "waste" screen. You can do the latter tame with the appropriate settings; if you reduce screen resolution and brightness, can handiness your autonomy and thereby extend the battery for 30 percent. It is also recommended to limit certain applications for social networks and messaging, which practically every minute "update" your data. But to shorten the story a bit: if you have it on your desk in the office wireless charger, if you charge your phone wirelessly in the car and if you "organize" your life by somehow charging your phone regularly and piecemeal, you will have practically every phone currently on the market, good experience. Smartphone in 2020 it must somehow allow wireless charging. This is an extremely convenient matter. The phone and its battery will be the most satisfied, as charging between 20 and 90 battery capacity percentages. In this way, the battery will also remain "strong" for a long time. So… there are many factors. Above all, satisfaction with the battery will be more a matter of your habits than of the phone itself. You know, you have to brush your teeth before bed.

Tip: years 2020 you need to require your new phone to be wireless charging capable. This is one of those must have features!

7. Do you play games on your phone?!

Do you play games on your phone?
Do you play games on your phone?

Gaming is the biggest industry and of course everyone has at least one game on their phone. Maybe a flight or driving simulator? Or some online casino, poker. Well, if you see yourself here somewhere, you need a good processor with the corresponding one good graphics and at least 6 GB of working memory. But the fact is that most premium phones support gaming perfectly, have "adequately" cooled processors and better graphics. Thus, by buying a "premium phone" you will somehow not go wrong, even if you will use it for playing games.

8. Price vs. the resulting value

Personally, I'm not a fan of the most expensive phones. I think you are grossly overpaying them and that they are in the mid-range phone candidates, which can be ticked next to all the properties discussed in this entry. Thus, they can satisfy practically every user, even the most demanding. Even if money is not an obstacle, maybe the most expensive phone is not the most optimal. Why buy a huge phone when I can buy a mid-sized one that I can still carry relatively comfortably in my pocket? So why would I go for phones that carry the + tag if they have no added value for me? I usually don't watch movies and TV, play games, etc. on my phone.

In the following, I will take you through a selection of my phones, which I rank as favorites in their categories.

The winning picks for 2020, by category:

These are created categories that define a specific smartphone user. And his optimal choice!

LG G8s - the most universal Android smartphone
LG G8s, the most versatile Android smartphone

LG G8s ThinQ

Category: The most versatile smartphone of 2020 and a purchase you can't miss

LG G8s ThinQ is a hidden favorite in my eyes already from the beginning of summer 2019, when it hit the shelves of our operators. It is practically the only phone that which has the ticks themselves. So: reasonable price, great processor, enough RAM, IP68 standard, wireless charging, some excellence in sound, good screen, etc. for very, very favorable binding options with operators. The buyer gets LG's flagship with all features of more expensive phones for a slightly lower price. This is also why this is a phone that I recommend to practically everyone.

iPhone 11 Pro Max
iPhone 11 Pro Max

iPhone 11 Pro

Category: videographer phone

If video and sound are important to you, there are only two phones I can recommend. Both record both video and audio better than the rest of the phones. That's them Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ and iPhone 11 Pro. It should be emphasized that the king of video is still the iPhone.

Samsung Galaxy S10
Samsung Galaxy S10

Samsung Galaxy S10

Category: the most beautiful phone

Uh. Tough choice because the phones are so similar! But if I look at the general, i.e. dimensions, usability, processing and quality, I would choose based on looks alone Samsung Galaxy S10. It is a medium-sized phone with a horizontal camera layout, which is somehow excellent and practically no worse than the of the larger S10+. However, beauty these days depends mostly on the cover and not the phone itself, which is the irony of phone design. Here I recommend Dbrand foils and protectors.

Huawei P30 Pro
Huawei P30 Pro

Huawei P30 Pro

Category: A phone whose battery lasts

That's how it is Huawei P30 Pro. At Huawei, they simply know how to make the user happy, and they perfectly manage the "consumption" of the battery of their phones. The battery simply lasts longer. So if you want a phone where you won't think about the battery, let it be Huawei P30 Pro the phone you choose!

Huawei P30 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ and Galaxy S10+, iPhone 11 Pro

Category: Best Camera

Simple! Huawei P30 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ and Galaxy S10+, iPhone 11 Pro ... are phones that will conjure up the best feelings for the user when taking photos. The Huawei P30 Pro is the best in low light and has the best telephoto lens, Samsung Note 10+ reproduces colors most realistically and has the option of an extremely wide angle. It is also at Samsung excellent video capture; but when it comes to video, the iPhone, which is back in the best game, is definitely way ahead of everyone else. The iPhone's camera isn't bad either, or it's in the holy trinity. Of course, all three "cameras" or smartphones will need a good photographer's eye and knowledge of the device's features. You can't go wrong with these. In terms of value - price - photo and video can however, I also highlight the LG G8s, as a phone that completely satisfied me photographically and is an excellent alternative to the above.

iPhone XR
iPhone XR

iPhone XR

Category: Best iPhone

I totally have my own opinion on this category. How it is in its entirety the best most powerful iPhone Pro 11, but I claim that most iPhone users will be satisfied by half the price iPhone XR. It is a good year-old model, but it has some "excellence" and an excellent value-for-price ratio. Above all, the battery should be praised, which really lasts a long time due to the otherwise somewhat weak screen. The design of the phone is very similar to this year's version, i.e. the phone iPhone 11. Here I am mainly referring to the "lens" of the phone, which is practically identical in shape. You can get an iPhone XR for 708 euros on the German Amazon!
