Kintsugi is a philosophy of Japanese practice that teaches us to repair broken ceramic products instead of throwing them away. This celebrates and preserves history, regardless of its flaws.

Interior design trends, inspired by many cultures around the world, are also carried into our homes. The trend of Murano glass, which comes from the Italian island of Murano, is becoming more and more popular, and Scandinavian minimalism has been with us for the past few years. We have also adopted concepts from Danish designers and French brands.

What is kintsugi

Despite the many trends, there is one emerging recently that is becoming a real hit - kintsugi. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing something that is broken, where gold dust is applied to the broken and glued part. His philosophy is that it is necessary fix broken things (rather than simply throw them away) and actually do them celebrate as part of history. Its origins date back to 15th century and is a long-standing tradition in Japan, which is most often used on pottery, on which pieces are glued together with gold lacquer. Thus, a broken bowl becomes even more beautiful because of its cracks, and instead of being thrown away, it becomes even more valuable because of its individuality.

The message of this philosophy is that we appreciate imperfections and find beauty in them, which is welcome in the midst of a culture obsessed with beauty standards and a world facing an environmental crisis. We recommend reading one of the books from the list below, where you will get an in-depth insight into the kintsugi philosophy.

How to learn kintsugi

If you love the Kintsugi aesthetic and connect with the ethos behind it, this is a wonderful opportunity to try it out for yourself. There are many ceramic repair kits available. It is important to note that all repaired items should be used for decorative purposes only and should not be used as a container for eating or drinking.
