The new Mercedes-Benz GLS: Titan

Mercedes-Benz responded to the challenge set by BMW some time ago with the X7 model and prepared a comprehensive renewal of the GLS model. And the first impressions speak of the fact that the "titan" has returned to the throne.

The biggest Mercedes-Benz the model has grown a bit more (7 cm) compared to its predecessor and got all the modern design guidelines of this brand. Otherwise, the increase in size is best seen in the middle, which is for 6 centimeters longer and thus enables a third row of seats, which in terms of functionality does not lag behind the other seats in the car - so even the passengers in the back row get a tablet for controlling entertainment and comfort. The third row simply folds into the chassis of the car, with a huge luggage compartment in the back up to 2400 liters.

There will be V8 engines that will be "hybridly" assisted by electricity or the EQ Boost system with a 48 volt system. Of course, all modern technology and driver assistance systems are at the highest level. Sales should start already this year, when the largest Mercedes-Benz will also hit Slovenian roads.

"The GLS combines modern luxury with the character of an SUV," says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Daimler AG. "Off-road design guidelines are combined with an elegance reminiscent of a classic luxury sedan. The interior is a synthesis of modern, luxurious aesthetics, SUV practicality and digital high technology, which at Mecedes-Benz means the best of all these worlds.”

Luxury aesthetics and technologies in the interior

The interior of the new GLS is luxurious, as evidenced by the leather that is part of the standard equipment package. The central element in the design of the dashboard is the extra-large display unit – 33 centimeters in diagonal, which is in a distinctive place on the dashboard. Large touch screen information system and MBUX entertainment, already known from the A class, enables the management of all comfort functions GLS from the driver's seat.

A special feature is the third row of seats, which does not lag behind the row immediately behind the driver and passenger in terms of comfort. All seats and seat configuration options are controlled electronically. The last two seats are elegantly stowed in the bottom of the trunk, thus creating a large space for luggage in the back of the new GLS. There is also a next-generation color Head-up display that sets new standards with a resolution of 720 x 240 pixels and an extended projection distance. The latter allows the driver to be able to practically on this screen watched movies, but of course only when the vehicles will drive completely autonomously.

High goals under the hood

High goals of the new Mercedes-Benz GLS are also clearly visible from the range of engines. The powerful six-cylinder and eight-cylinder engines provide everything that the fifth-generation buyers of this SUV could wish for – i.e. ride comfort and carefree top power that match the characteristics of this luxury car.

It will be shortly after the launch of the model premier presented a modern powertrain with a label GLS 580 4MATIC, which represents electrified V8 gasoline engine with a 48-volt built-in electrical system. The latter will be capable of 360 kW (489 hp) and 700 Nm of torque, with an additional 250 Nm of torque and 16 kW / 22 hp available via the EQ Boost hybrid system for short periods. Of course, diesel engines will be available for Europe, and even more so when the presentation of this model is also here.

With the GLS, Mercedes-Benz responded extremely well to the challenges posed by its competitors. And again swung to the highest place by desirability.
