Lake Retba (Lac Rose)

Location: Dakar, Senegal

Lake Retba or Lacquer Rose is located north of the Cap Vert peninsula in Senegal, northeast of Dakar. The pink color of the water is especially visible during the dry season. The lake has a very high salt content, about 40 %, so it is impossible to dive into it, just like the Black Sea. The local salt collectors, who spend several hours a day in the water of the lake, regularly apply shea butter to prevent the salt from corroding their skin.

Massagergol or Masazir is a pink lake in the Qaradag district near Baku. The total area of the lake is 10 square kilometers, and the lake water contains large amounts of chlorides and sulfates. And yes, the whole area smells like sulfur. Lake Masazir is pink due to high salinity. Salt has been extracted from it for more than two hundred years - it is estimated that there are still 1.7 billion tons of salt waiting in Masazir.

The color of the lake is created by a combination of red minerals, a high concentration of borax and the well-known algae Dunaliella salina. If you've ever seen a photo of flamingos on a pink lake and thought it was a photomontage, you might be wrong. In fact, the flamingos that live here are pink precisely because of the nutrients from the lake.
