We all know that moment when we open the fridge and see wilted lettuce or moldy strawberries that looked perfect just a few days ago. What can we do to prevent this from happening again? Use a paper towel!

It's probably happened to you before: on Monday you buy a bunch of fresh lettuce and a box of strawberries, and by Wednesday the lettuce is wilted and soft, and the strawberries are covered in mold.

It's not necessarily your storage error – the main culprit is moisture, which accumulates in plastic packaging and the refrigerator and accelerates spoilage.

The solution is surprisingly simple – plain paper towel.

Below we explain, why this trick actually works, how to use it correctly, and which mistakes when storing lettuce and berries in the refrigerator most often shorten their freshness.

Why do lettuce and strawberries spoil so quickly?

Lettuce (such as romaine, arugula, spinach, or bagged mixed salads) and berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries) are full of water.

When stored in the refrigerator, the leaves and berries breathe and they release moisture, which accumulates in closed packaging. This excess moisture creates an ideal environment for bacterial development and mold.

In lettuce, this is known as wrinkled, wilted, soft leaves, and in strawberries, as softened, moldy areas that can spread to the entire box within one to two days.

Wash the leaves. and dry thoroughly (preferably in a salad spinner). Place a paper towel in the bottom of a container or storage bag, place the lettuce on it, and add another towel on top. Close the container, but not completely hermeticso that air can circulate.

The paper towel acts as a moisture absorber, traps condensationbefore it comes into contact with the lettuce leaves, which slows down the spoilage process.

How to prolong the freshness of berries with the same trick

For strawberries, raspberries or blueberries, the process is similar, except that they are usually do not pre-wash, as water accelerates the formation of mold.

Examine the berries and remove damaged or moldy fruits, as one infected fruit quickly infects the entire box.

Place on the bottom of the container paper towel, arrange the fruit in a single layer, cover the container if possible, but leave it slightly open for drainage air.

Towel at the bottom of the bowl prevent, to keep the berries in their own moisture, which is one of the main reasons for their rapid mold growth.
