Tesla has done what it should have done before. After nearly a year of the long-wheelbase version being available only in China, the Model YL is now available in the U.S. — and this time with a truly usable third row. 31 inches of rear legroom is a game-changer. Finally, it's not about squeezing kids or luggage. It's a third row where you can fit an adult passenger without wondering if they'll ever walk again.
When you look at the car from the side, you immediately see that it is more than just a cosmetic extension. Model YL it is 18.5 cm longer from the regular Model Y, of which 15 cm in wheelbase. This is no small change. This is a real transformation of the vehicle's architecture, making the cabin significantly more spacious and more friendly to all passengers.
Luggage space has also increased. With all three rows folded, it offers more than 2400 liters, which is enough for a serious family vacation without an additional trailer. Even when the third row is occupied, there is still enough space for suitcases and shopping bags.

An interior that finally serves the family
The second row is now arranged in two captain's chairs. It's not just a nicer look — it means easier access to the third row and more comfort for all passengers. Tesla didn't just add space. It also added equipment that wasn't in the base Model Y.
The front seats now have better thigh support and adjustable headrests. The second row seats are heated and ventilated, with electric armrests. The third row folds electrically. The sound system has been upgraded to 18 speakersVehicle-to-Load is also available, meaning the car can power external devices — from camping gear to tools.
All these details together create the feeling that the Model YL is truly made for families who use the car every day and not just occasionally.
Performance and range without compromise
Performance-wise, things haven't changed dramatically, which is an advantage in this case. We're still talking about a fast AWD drivetrain, which 0 to 100 km/h done in 4.4 secondsThe range is estimated at 523 km, which is only slightly less than the standard Premium Model Y.
In practice, this will still be a car that you can take on a long family trip with without much stress — provided, of course, that you have somewhere to charge. The difference in range is so small that it's almost unnoticeable in real life.

Price and market positioning
The Launch Series version in the US costs $61,990That's well above the regular Model Y and even the Performance version. For that money, you get the most expensive Model Y yet — and the most practical.
In Europe, the price will likely be even higher, but if the experience in China is anything to go by, the Model YL will quickly become one of the most sought-after family electric cars in the segment. It's a car that no longer requires you to sacrifice space for electric power.
What does this mean for Slovenia?
This car is particularly interesting for Slovenia. The Model Y is already one of the most popular electric cars in our country. The L version could be the step that will allow larger families to truly live with one electric car — without constantly finding compromises between space, range and comfort. We can expect it next year – also in the EU.
School, sports activities, vacations, everyday chores. All in one car that is fast, quiet and spacious enough for six people. This is the point where electric mobility finally becomes a real alternative for the average Slovenian family.
Of course, one important reality remains. A great car won't be enough in a great world. If you want to take your family to the seaside or to the mountains in the third row, you want charging to work without unnecessary stress. Tesla makes cars that are often a step ahead of the infrastructure – not technologically, but philosophically. . And in Slovenia, this gap is still felt on every long trip.
Conclusion
The Model YL is proof that Tesla is listening to the market and its critics. After the Model X was discontinued, it has finally offered a true six-seat electric crossover that isn't half-baked. It's not a revolution in the sense of a completely new concept. But it is a significant correction that many people have been waiting for.
Finally, we have a Model Y that can truly serve as the only family car without having to apologize for third-row space. Now it's up to the infrastructure to follow — because the car is here. The question is, are we ready?
