On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, we will also be able to observe a distinct partial solar eclipse from Slovenia. According to data published by Natural History Museum of Slovenia, the Moon will cover more than 84 percent of the Sun's surface. The sky will become the stage for one of the most impressive natural phenomena for a while - without tickets, VIP boxes and obnoxiously expensive sparkling wine.

If the weather cooperates, we're in for a sight that will make even the most loyal phone screen viewers look up for a moment.

What will happen on August 12, 2026?

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun, covering part of the Sun's surface from our perspective. Since Slovenia will not be in the area of a total eclipse, we will observe a partial solar eclipse.

But the term "partial" is a bit of an understatement this time. If the Moon does indeed block more than 84 percent of the Sun's visible surface, only a narrow, brightly lit section of the Sun will remain visible. The surrounding light may change noticeably, and the landscape will take on an unusual, almost cinematic atmosphere for a while.

The exact degree of obscuration and the timing of the individual phases of the eclipse will vary slightly depending on the location of observation, so it is advisable to check local astronomical data before the event. In Slovenia, the partial solar eclipse on August 12, 2026 will begin at approximately 19:25, and the maximum phase will be observed at around 20:10, just before sunset. The exact time will vary by a few minutes depending on the location, so an open view towards the western horizon will be necessary for observation. The total solar eclipse, meanwhile, will be visible in a narrow band over Greenland, western Iceland, and northern and northeastern Spain, including parts of the Balearic Islands.

Why will this solar eclipse be so special?

The high degree of obscuration means that the phenomenon will be significantly more pronounced than a typical partial eclipse, in which the Moon merely "bites off" a small piece of the Sun. This time, the celestial choreography will be much more ambitious.

However, day will not completely turn into night. Complete darkness occurs only in a narrow area of a total solar eclipse, where the Moon completely covers the Sun for a short time. In Slovenia, we will remain outside this zone, but the scene will still be extremely photogenic and worth planning an observation due to the more than 84% obscuration.

How to safely observe a solar eclipse?

Even when the vast majority of the Sun is obscured, looking directly at it without proper protection is not safe. The remaining visible part of the Sun's surface is still strong enough to damage the eyes. Ordinary sunglasses are no help – no matter how big, dark or Milanese-style they are.

For direct observation, use certified solar eclipse glasses that comply with ISO 12312-2. Before use, check that the film and filters are undamaged. Do not observe the Sun through a camera, binoculars, or telescope without an appropriate solar filter installed on the front of the optical device. Eclipse glasses alone do not provide sufficient protection when viewing through magnification.

A safe alternative is indirect observation by projection through a small aperture. Detailed recommendations for eye protection are also published by NASA.

How to prepare for observation?

For the best experience, choose a location with an open horizon and as few obstacles as possible. A suitable viewing hill, meadow, or larger open area will generally be a better choice than a balcony adorned with your neighbor's air conditioner, satellite dish, and three strategically placed cypress trees.

Get your eclipse glasses early, as they often become scarce just before major astronomical events. Before you go, check the weather forecast, charge your phone or camera, and make sure your photography equipment is equipped with an appropriate solar filter.

When taking photos, safety should be more important than the perfect shot for social media. The algorithm will survive without your eclipse photo. Retina is a little less flexible.

If weather conditions are favorable, we will observe a partial solar eclipse from Slovenia, during which, according to the forecast of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History, more than 84 percent of the Sun's surface will be obscured.
