Pokljuka, a high karst plateau on the eastern edge of the unspoilt Triglav National Park, is a popular tourist spot among nature and exercise lovers.
March is traditionally reserved for the Pokljuka Marathon. The Pokljuka Marathon 2017, the 27th in a row, will take place on March 4. Recreational cross-country skiers will be able to compete in a half-marathon and a 10.5-kilometer cross-country skiing challenge.
In Slovenia, the first avalanche information boards have been erected in the Julian Alps. The number of visitors to the mountains in winter has grown dramatically in recent years. Many of them are quite brave and not just extreme athletes. Alpinists, hikers, snowshoers, touring skiers, freeriders go to the hills in winter, and families with small children are among them. But mountains are dangerous. Especially at a time when the hills are whitewashed and the danger of avalanches lurks on them. Too often we ignore this danger, saying that it can't happen to us anymore. Therefore, we do not know what to do if we are actually surprised by an avalanche. These boards can save your life!
For all those who like to test the limits and love challenges, the Oviratlon Obstacke Challenge in Pokljuka will be a real adventure.
In March, Pokljuka will host the Biathlon World Cup, which will also be the first international biathlon competition of the highest level after the Winter Olympics in Sochi.
