Telašćica: one of the most beautiful bays on the Adriatic and a town of wonderful nature

The magical Dugi otok is an island of contrasts, picturesque places and lush vegetation, an island of enchanting cliffs, hidden beaches and beautiful bays. And one of the most beautiful is the bay of Telašćica, a national park that is a place of wonderful nature and almost certainly the most beautiful bay on the Adriatic!

Telašćica Bay is located on the southeastern part of the island Long Island. Due to its extraordinary beauty, wealth and importance, this bay, which is surrounded by 13 islands and islets, and within it we find six more islets, was declared in 1988 natural park.

The area of the Telašćica Nature Park is rich in quiet and peaceful beaches, a gentle coast on one side and wild rocks on the other, with valuable flora and fauna, geological and geomorphological phenomena and an interesting archaeological heritage. The underwater world has over 300 plant and 300 animal species.

The three natural phenomena of this area are: the unique bay of Telašćica, the most beautiful and largest natural harbor on the Adriatic Sea, with 25 smaller beaches; cliffs of Dugi Otok or the so-called "walls", which rise up to 161 meters above sea level and descend to a depth of up to 90 meters; salt lake Mir with medicinal properties. The most picturesque islet is the island of Katina, and the most unusual is definitely Taljurić.

According to legend, the Lake Mir was once a field owned by two brothers who would plow grain. One brother was blind and relied on the other to help him fill his barrel with grain. The seeing brother grew greedy and began to fill his barrel with grain. He turned his brother's barrel upside down and filled only the top of the barrel. The blind brother became suspicious and asked his brother if he was cheating him out of his share. The greedy brother proclaimed "if I cheat you brother then God will fill this field with water". Sure enough, the field became flooded and is now what we know as Lake Mir. They testify that Telašćica has been a populated area since ancient times remains of Roman buildings in Mali Proversa, as well as many others pre-Romanesque churches, among which the church of St. Ivan in Stivanje polje. Also, the beginnings of fishing in Croatia began precisely on these shores, as evidenced by a record from the 10th century.

It is possible in the nature park to dive in several attractive locations, to walk around interesting places, but you should definitely not miss it wonderful view from Grpašćak point.
