Volkswagen has revealed photos of its latest electric ID R Pikes Peak racer. With it, they want to set a new record in the class of electric cars at the Pikes Peak mountain race in Colorado. The three-time winner of this famous race, Romain Dumas, will be behind the wheel, and the four-wheel drive and electric motor will take care of everything else.
Volkswagen ID R Pikes Peak it represents everything that Volkswagen's sports department has learned from 1916 to the present day. The role of the ID R racing car is not only to win the race, but to act as intermediate clause, between Volkswagen's ID and R. Departments ID presents electric cars that will soon evolve from concept forms to road-going versions, the department R however, it represents the already known, most 'filed' Volkswagen examples, such as, for example Golf R.
Although the Volkswagen ID R Pikes Peak has a shape that resembles the shape of the racing cars from the competition Le Mans, we can recognize several design features of the ID series cars in it. We don't know much about the technical data yet, it is certain that Volkswagen will squeeze the maximum out of the racing car and send as much power as possible through electric motor and four-wheel drive on the road.
The current Pikes Peak race record is for electric cars 8,57,118 minutes. During this time it is necessary to drive almost 20 kilometers along a steep road, towards Pikes Peak in the Rocky Mountains. The time was achieved with the eO PP100 racing car, which had approx 1,600 horsepower.
This will be Volkswagen's second attempt at winning this year 'racing to the clouds'. In 1987, they entered the competition with a Golf that had two engines, the first to drive the front wheels and the second to drive the rear wheels. The performance was successful, although they narrowly missed the title of fastest. After more than 30 years, Volkswagen is finally ready for 'revenge', but we will find out how they will succeed June 24, 2018.
