Volvo XC60: Swedish design named World Car of the Year 2018

The finalists for the World Car of the Year 2018 were announced back in January, and the final act took place these days at the New York Auto Show. Among the narrow candidates, we found the Kia Stinger, the electric Nissan Leaf and the likable Range Rover Velar. But the World Car of the Year award was taken home by Volvo with its XC60 SUV.

Volvo for the first time in its history, it claimed the title of World Car of the Year. For the model XC60 this is the second award this year, as he was previously recognized as the best North American utility a car. So he joined the award-winning Volvo XC40, which was named European Car of the Year at the beginning of March at the Geneva Motor Show.

Opponents at the selection were certainly interesting and competitive. Among the candidates were electric ones Nissan Leaf, limousine Alfa Romeo Giulia and Toyota Camry and the aforementioned sports Kia Stinger. Among the SUVs, there were other candidates BMW X3, Land Rover Discovery, Mazda CX-5, Range Rover Velar and a crossbreed Volkswagen T-Roc. In addition to the World Car of the Year title, the commission awarded several other awards. The Range Rover Velar took home the award for the best design, Nissan Leaf for the most green car, BMW M5 with 600 horsepower for the most powerful car of the year, Audi A8 for luxurious car of the year and Volkswagen Polo for the best urban car of the year.
