Anthony Bourdain was a global culinary adventurer who left the world on July 8 last year. His life was varied, and people around the world could follow him on his shows, where he traveled the world and tried various delicacies, as well as things that many of us would not dare to put in our mouths (ant larvae, raw seals eyes, cobra...). And that's probably why we can completely trust him when choosing those destinations that will impress us with their beauty and cuisine, but at the same time we won't meet there, as Bourdain himself would say, "douchebags".
Anthony Bourdain he did what many of us aspire to do in life - he traveled the world for a living. In October 2015, the now-defunct website Li.st drew attention to five places around the world, where "there are no men who want to give you a high five, oligarchs in tight swimsuits, drunken fans or tour buses full of ugly trainers". These destinations have thus earned the very respectable title of “underrated, 'douche-free'” destinations by Anthony Bourdain, the king of travel TV.
Uruguay
Bourdain says: “Montevideo is beautiful and uncrowded. The coast - once you get out of the resort area - is wild and magnificent. The food is generally full of excess, although not exactly vegetarian friendly. I recommend the excellent morcilla sausages (ob. a type of blood sausage).”
Marseille, France
Bourdain said that the French may not be paying enough attention to their second largest city, but he is not one of them. Bouillabaisse, a Corsican cured meat product, couscous, swimming in the sea, a day trip to Provence and lots of Pastis (anise aperitif) are served. According to him, the city is relaxed, multicultural and very underrated.
Laos
Luang Prabang and Vientiane are no longer unknown places, but if you go on a road trip through the Plain of Jars, you will step into another century. Want to get lost? Then this is the ideal place. Absolutely wonderful, with a rich history, but you probably don't even know the tradition of their amazing food. At least that's according to Bourdain, who, at least when it comes to food, can be trusted 100 percent.
Sardinia
"No, not to the shore," says Bourdain. "Italian soccer stars go there to pose with their current girlfriends." Therefore, he recommends visiting the interior, which he considers to be a completely different planet. Malloreddus (Sardinian gnocchi), roasted kid, delicious prosciutto, Catalan lobster, fantastic cheeses and spaghetti a la bottarga are just some of the delicacies you can taste.
Beirut, Lebanon
Never fear, Beirut is a magical place. Although it may be plagued by all the problems of this world, it has everything you want and expect in the 'Paris of the Orient'. Not only is it a quick lesson in the complexities of this world, it's also wonderful, exciting, heartbreaking... The food is fantastic and varied. Traveling there is a joy and it is an education. "Go ahead. The more people who go, the more chance there is to make the world a better place,” adds Bourdain.
