The new IKEA in Vienna will be greener than a regular city park!

The new IKEA in Vienna will not offer parking, as it will encourage customers to come to the store on foot or by public transport.

Cities are getting bigger and bigger, with more and more traffic and, unfortunately, less green space. Therefore, the idea of a building in which both smaller plants and trees would grow is not new. We have already seen quite a few implementations, and one of them is about to experience the new Petrol office building (if it will be built) and new shopping center Alley in Šiška, Ljubljana.

Bold and innovative ideas were also tackled at Querkraft Architekten, where they are for Swedish IKEA in Vienna designed a new store. They started building this a few days ago and it is expected that it will be the greenest around.

The new IKEA in Vienna will be located at the Westbahnhof station.

A seven-story building will be adorned with a huge number of species plants and trees so on facades as in top of the building, where there will be a terrace. The interior will not only be a shopping center with a restaurant, but also a real little park. The microclimate in the building will thus be taken care of 160 trees. A special feature of the building design is that it is possible add or remove square parts of the building. This IKEA will not offer car parking, as it is intended for people who will get there on foot or by public transport, and the purchased furniture will be delivered to home. The construction of the new IKEA in Vienna is expected to be completed in 2021.

What about IKEA in Ljubljana 2020?

Special attention will be paid to the introduction of many sustainable solutions, which will also have a positive impact on the neighboring community. IKEA Ljubljana will obtain 90 percent of the energy needed for its operation from renewable sources, including solar cells on the roof. Geothermal energy will be used for heating and rainwater for flushing and watering. They will plant on the green areas next to the store local tree species, and they will turn green also the roof. It will be organized separation of 23 types of waste, and a smart system will take care of wastewater treatment.
