Baby G-Class? The legendary G-Class has been Mercedes' most enduring model since 1979, and it's not going anywhere anytime soon. A report from German business paper Handelsblatt suggests that the three-pointed star automaker is working on a smaller G-Class that could hit the market as early as 2026. Unlike its iconic G-Wagon counterpart, the smaller version will not be mechanically linked to the larger version. Instead, it is expected to be based on Mercedes' new MMA architecture, which will debut in 2024.
We will get a new member of the Mercedes-Benz model range – the Baby G-Class. Mercedes has always been known for producing luxury cars that offer a unique driving experience. Class G, also known as G-Wagon, has been the pinnacle of the Mercedes range since its inception in 1979. Its durability, robustness and classic design have made it an icon adored by car enthusiasts and celebrities alike.
The cult G-Class will soon get a new family member, a smaller version, which is expected to be introduced in 2026. According to reports Handelsblatt is the CEO of Mercedes Ola Källenius the driving force behind the project. Unlike the larger version, the little G-Class won't be called the GLG and won't be mechanically related to the To the G-Wagon. Instead, it will be based on new MMA architectures, to be launched in 2024, on the same underpinnings used for the next-generation CLA, CLA Shooting Brake, GLA and GLB.
Smaller class G will be unibody crossover, similar to the relationship between the Ford Bronco and the Bronco Sport. That means it won't match the off-road capabilities of the iconic G-Wagon, but will offer a more refined and comfortable driving experience. The smaller G-Class is expected to have a lower ride height, lower ground clearance and worse entry and departure angles than its larger counterpart.
The new G-Class is expected to be equipped with engines from internal combustion and electric drives, says Christoph Starzynski, Mercedes-Benz Vice President of Development for Electric Drive. Architecture of MMA is designed to support 800V fast charging, better batteries and the new MB.OS software for cars that will be at least 4.5 meters (177 inches) long. These vehicles will be part of Mercedes' "Entry Luxury" class and will use the experience gained in the field of aerodynamics during the development of the concept Vision EQXX.
Although the architecture MMA designed first for EVs, not exclusive to electric powertrains. This means that the smaller G-Class will have both drives ICE like EV. However, Starzynski mentioned that they will be on the sidelines ICE accepted compromises.
Smaller class G it will be boxy like a real G and should be at least 4.5 meters (177 inches) long. It won't match the off-road capabilities of the iconic G-Wagon, but it will offer a more comfortable and refined driving experience. The MMA architecture is designed to support both internal combustion engines and electric powertrains, meaning the smaller G-Class will be available in both ICE and EV versions.
While the smaller G-Class won't be as rugged and off-road capable as the iconic G-Wagon, it will still be a unique addition to the Mercedes lineup. The smaller G-Class is likely to appeal to buyers who want a luxury SUV with a classic design that's capable of off-roading, but offers a more comfortable and refined driving experience.
