Following the eighth generation Hilux that hit the scene in 2015, the Toyota Hilux GR Sport II returns with a second iteration designed for those who want something more. First introduced in early 2022, the variant has now received some aesthetic and mechanical upgrades, although it remains in the lower grade of the GR Sport and thus does not bring any additional power under the hood.

Characteristic of this version, the Toyota Hilux GR Sport II now sits 20 millimeters (0.8 inches) higher thanks to a raised suspension. This is followed by a wider front and rear track measuring 140 mm (5.5 in) and 150 mm (5.9 in) in width, which contributes to a more stable ride on challenging terrain. New 17-inch lightweight wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires improve off-road performance, while the approach angle has been improved from 29 to 30 degrees, making it easier to overcome obstacles.

Toyota has spared no detail in improving the comfort and responsiveness of the vehicle on rough terrain. New monotube dampers provide quicker response, and an enlarged front disc brake delivers improved stopping power. Compared to the previous version, disc brakes have been installed at the rear instead of drum brakes, which contributes to better braking performance.

Aesthetic upgrades include a mesh grille, red brake calipers and dark accents that add a dynamic and sporty look. The red and black theme continues inside, where GR logos adorn the front headrests, while the seatbelts are colored red. Standard equipment includes an 8-inch touchscreen with built-in navigation and wired and wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay, while Android Auto is only supported via a wired connection.

Under the hood, the 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine remains unchanged, delivering 201 horsepower and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque, transmitted through a six-speed automatic transmission. In some markets, Toyota also offers a more powerful version of the Hilux GR Sport with 221 hp and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque.

Sales of the Toyota Hilux GR Sport II will begin early next year, with first deliveries scheduled for later in 2024.
