When we drink our first coffee in the morning, caffeine begins to be quickly absorbed and spread throughout the body. During this time, we notice an increase in blood pressure and heart rate. Caffeine also prevents the absorption of dopamine in the brain, which makes us feel more positive and happy. This temporary lift in mood is often what makes us more alert and ready for a new day.

10 – 20 minutes

Caffeine binds to adenosine receptors in the brain, which are responsible for the feeling of fatigue. By doing so, it prevents adenosine from binding to these receptors and consequently reduces the feeling of fatigue. This effect contributes to a feeling of alertness and focus.

30 minutes

The adrenal glands start to work and secrete more adrenaline and other hormones that contribute to the increased feeling of energy. At the same time, caffeine dilates the pupils, which improves our vision.

The body begins to produce more serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in mood regulation. This can improve the functioning of neurons in the spinal cord, leading to better coordination and muscle strength.

Metabolism is accelerated, which means that energy is used faster. During this time, the breakdown of stored fat in the body also begins, which can help with weight loss.

After six hours, most are caffeine already eliminated from the body. Because of this, we may feel an increased need to urinate.
