The end for the Porsche 718, which is saying goodbye in Europe

But only two still persist on the scene

In a world where farewells are often bitter but inevitable, we are witnessing the departure of the Porsche 718 from Europe. But before you start feeling sad, let us console you: the Cayman GT4 RS and the Boxster RS Spyder evade the new rules and will continue to grace European roads.

In an age when the roads have become the arenas of digital battles and vehicles no less than avatars of modern technology, the Porsche 718, like a child of the previous decade, retreats from the new European regulations on cyber security. This sudden retirement of two icons – the Boxster and the Cayman – marks the end of a chapter for Porsche in the European Union.

Oliver Hilger, the representative of the Porsche brand for the 718 model, confirmed that both the coupe and the convertible have already said goodbye to the European market. But not everything is so black. As small series, the Cayman GT4 RS and Boxster RS Spyder will be exempt from these restrictions, giving hope that the passion for driving will continue to live on in the hearts of European speed lovers.

The reason for this a melancholic epilogue follows in the electrical architecture of vehicles, which cannot keep up with the rhythm of new cyber demands. Porsche estimated that adapting vehicles to the new regulations would cost almost as much as developing a completely new model, which is not economically justified.

At a time when every end also means a new beginning, Porsche is already announcing the arrival of the new generation 718, this time in a fully electric version. The announcement for 2025 promises that gasoline and electric models will shape the future of the brand in parallel for some time.

For those of you still yearning for the feel of the 718, all is not lost. Until July 2024, when the new regulations come into force, it is still possible to find a new, unsold Boxster or Cayman. But the clock is ticking and when midnight strikes, these cars will become part of history, unavailable for new registration in the European Union.

Porsche's decision to withdraw the 718 models from the market marks the end of a chapter in the brand's history, but at the same time opens the door to new innovations. The Cayman GT4 RS and Boxster RS Spyder stand as reminders of the unrivaled legacy the 718 leaves behind. At the same time, we eagerly await the new electric era announced by Porsche. Despite the end of sales of these legendary models in Europe, their spirit remains as a symbol of innovation, performance and an irresistible desire to exceed the limits of the possible. At a time when the automotive industry is moving inexorably towards electrification, Porsche promises to make driving an equally thrilling adventure with its upcoming electric models.
