The Volvo XC90 wants to once again push the boundaries of advanced technology, safety and prestige

Volvo XC90

The renowned Swedish brand is re-entering the Slovenian market, this time with much bolder plans and also with a new iron in the fire - a new flagship called the Volvo XC90. Slovenian buyers can already order this at prices starting at 64,600 euros, and there is also a plug-in hybrid XC90 that can cover distances of up to 40 km on electricity alone.

In the segment prestigious suvs, after 13 long years, is rejoining the competition parade horses Swedish brands – Volvo XC90. Not only because of the success of its predecessor, which stayed on the market for an extremely long time and convinced over 630 thousand buyers, but also because they want it Swedes put literally side by side "German Holy Trinity", and in many respects to surpass it, that is to say to seduce before it. Namely, as the first and only one that can offer a hybrid drive in combination with a seven-seat design. However, the excesses do not end here, because just like its predecessor in 2002, it wants to once again become and be a pioneer in the field of advanced technology.

The nose of the vehicle is futuristic, and the lights shine entirely with the help of advanced LEDs and automatically adapt to the conditions, the driver and other road users.
The nose of the vehicle is futuristic, and the lights shine entirely with the help of advanced LEDs and automatically adapt to the conditions, the driver and other road users.

Since there's been a lot of talk about autonomous driving lately, it's worth starting with that, and the XC90 is the first to take most of the driving burden off the driver, at least part of the time behind the wheel. Partly autonomous driving namely, they are provided by systems united under the name pilot assist. The system works by using the radar cruise control and the lane assist system to maintain a distance from the vehicles in front and keep the vehicle within the lane, while the system can also stop the vehicle completely and start again when the convoy moves. In addition, it is available whole phalanx the others assistance systems, which are presented for the first time. Among these, it is worth highlighting the system "autobrake in intersection" and "run off road", where the first detects the marked direction of oncoming vehicles at intersections and when turning in the event that the path of your vehicle intersects with a vehicle, which automatically brakes the vehicle in front of you. At the second one advanced sensor system detects if the driver loses control of the vehicle and drives off the roadway, and the system activates the seat belt tensioners and helps dampen vibrations and holds the passengers' bodies firmly in place, and in the event of a collision, the vehicle also brakes and possibly prepares for a collision (retracts the pedals , close windows, etc.).

The interior is Swedishly refined and calm, yet elegant and prestigious. A special feature is the huge central screen, which has taken over the role of practically all the switches and displaying the operation of the various components of the vehicle.

In addition to the front radar for detecting pedestrians, cyclists and the like, it also presents a novelty rear radar system, which warns vehicles behind you of the possibility of a collision, if the driver behind you does not respond to the light warnings, it also prepares the passengers for a collision and also optimally protects them from "whiplash" and the like. At the same time, safety curtains are deployed over all three rows of seats, and the driver is also assisted by the second generation parking assistant, which, in addition to lateral parking, is now automatic also parks in reverse.

It's the first time with motorbikes at each pole available after one engine, besides these, it is here also a hybrid version, capable of 400 hp and on average consumes only 2.5 liters fuel and for 64 grams of emissions CO2. The hybrid powertrain consists of a gasoline engine that develops 235 kW or 320 km and an electric motor with a power of 59 kW (total of 294 kW). This is enough for a plug-in hybrid that can 40 km to transport only on electricity, covers the hundred on the meter in just 5.9 seconds.

The gauges in front of the driver are completely digital.

They will be available to more classically oriented buyers gasoline T6 with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the nose that develops 235 kW (the same as in the hybrid) and diesel D5, where the engine of the same size and also of four-cylinder design develops 165 kW and emits only 152 grams of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere on average.

Regardless of the engine in the nose, part of the standard equipment is always the connectable four-wheel drive and eight-speed shiftable automatic. Among the equipment for the most fifth graders, it is worth mentioning the advanced audio system of the renowned B&W, who took care of 1400W sound system and audiophile sound from 19 speakers, which are able to reproduce the sound picture of one of the most beautiful symphonies from Gothenburg's Kontserthuset, home of the Swedish Symphony Orchestra. It is a special feature gear lever crystal glass in the T8 version, the work of a renowned Swedish glassmaker. Regarding spaciousness, the Swedes like to say that the XC90 is one of the most spacious in the segment, especially when it comes to the spaciousness of the third row of seats, where two people up to 170 cm in height will comfortably sit, which represents a record achievement in the segment.

Despite its hybrid design (the photo shows the plug-in hybrid T8), the new XC90 can still accommodate seven adults. Even people 170 cm tall can sit comfortably in the third row, which is a record in the segment, according to Volvo.

Prices start at 64,600 euros for version D5 and continue at 73,050 euros for the T6. For those who are more "eco", the plug-in hybrid will be the only suitable one T8, whose prices start slightly above 90 thousands of euros. A comparison with the closest competitors, the BMW X5 and the Mercedes M-Class, shows that the XC90 is surprisingly priced even slightly higher, as the prices of the Bavarian (X5 sDrive25d with 160 kW) start at 60,400 euros, the representative with the three-pointed star on the nose (ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC with 150 kW) and even a little lower at 58,300 euros.
