New Mazda CX-60: it is an interesting plug-in hybrid, with a familiar face

It looks familiar, but the Mazda CX-60 is a completely new car that continues the common Mazda language outlined years ago. It comes as the company's first plug-in hybrid model and comes with an i-Activ AWD setup that drives primarily the rear wheels.

The new Mazda CX-60 will be the first to come to the market with a combination of an atmospheric 2.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor. Mazda claims the internal combustion engine delivers 189 horsepower (141 kilowatts) at 6,000 rpm and 261 newton meters of torque at 4,000 rpm. As for the electric motor, it is capable of pushing out 134 hp (100 kW) and 250 Nm of torque. In combination, the so-called e-Skyactiv sends a respectable 323 hp (241 kW) and 500 Nm to the road. Not bad for a family SUV. But it is necessary to know that due to the combination of drives and battery, the car is also quite heavy - barely 2100 kilograms.

The CX-60 accelerated to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds. It will be electronically limited to 200 km/h when used as a plug-in hybrid, but on electricity alone it will be capable of up to 140 km/h. Speaking of emission-free operation, the lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 17.8 kWh with enough range of up to 63 kilometers in the WLTP combined cycle. This means that it will sail without any problems in the city centers without any noise and emissions.

In terms of size, the Mazda CX-60 is 4,745 millimeters long, 1,890 mm wide and 1,670 mm tall, with a wheelbase that measures 2,870 mm. This makes it slightly larger in all directions compared to the recently introduced “front-wheel drive” CX-50, which is only available in North America.

The interior is quite luxurious and gives off a bit of a Volvo vibe to reiterate Mazda's intentions to become a full-fledged luxury brand. There is a noticeable industry trend towards using fewer buttons, but without overdoing it, as you still have a range of physical controls. Thankfully, not everything is yet integrated into the infotainment, which can be operated via a 12.3-inch touchscreen or rotary knob. The digital instrument panel has the same diagonal as the main screen. Mazda will sell the CX-60 in Germany in Prime, Exclusive, Homura and Takumi equipment packages, with prices ranging from 47,390 to 52,890 euros. Mazda is also announcing the CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90 models for the future, some of which will be available only for North America.
