The Norwegians want to build the world's first ship tunnel

Ship tunnel in Norway

The Norwegians already have the longest road tunnel in the world (Laerdal), and in the future they could get the world's first shipping tunnel. From 70 to 120 ships will be able to sail through the tunnel daily, which will thus avoid the challenging weather conditions around the Stad peninsula. Both ferries and tourist and fishing boats are supposed to sail through it.

Norwegians they want to build the first ship tunnel in the world. They have not started building the tunnel yet, as they are currently checking the expediency of the construction. If the project gets the green light, it should sail through to 120 ships daily and thus made it much easier for them to navigate around Stad peninsula, as high waves and strong winds reign here for almost a third of the year, which is why it is one of the most dangerous sections of the Norwegian coast. The tunnel should be long 1.7 kilometers, 37 meters high and 26.5 meters wide (for comparison, Titanic was 28 meters wide). Norway is expected to invest in the project 230 million euros.

Since a high hill rises on the peninsula, the possibility of a canal is out of the question. They are about to start digging the tunnel in 2018, and it will be completed in a period of three to four years. Ship's traffic will be one-way, and the direction will change once an hour.
