Rösti is Switzerland's national food. It is a simple potato dish, which, like Roger Federer, is a true symbol and pride of the country. It comes from the canton of Bern, where it used to be a staple of hearty peasant breakfasts, and from the times when there was nothing more than a pan and a hearth in farmhouses, so it makes sense that it's not difficult to prepare.

Rosti (also resti) is from eating for breakfast changed to attachment, which is usually served with spinach or meat. It is served in all Swiss restaurants, but you don't have to travel hundreds of kilometers to get it. Potato patties you can also prepare it yourself at home.

If the rösti will be a side dish to the meat with sauce, prepare it from boiled potatoes, if it will be an independent dish and baked, e.g. together with cheese, use raw.

Rösti recipe:

Ingredients for rösti (for 4 people):

  • 750 g of potatoes
  • 1 medium onion
  • 3 tablespoons of butter
  • salt
  • pepper

Rösti preparation process:
Wash the potatoes, put them in a pot and cover them with water. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes (the potatoes should not be overcooked). Drain the water and let the potatoes cool in their skins. Only then do we peel it and grate it. Then peel the onion, chop it finely and add it to the bowl with the potatoes. Add salt, pepper and mix. Heat two spoons of butter (you can also use oil) in a pan, add grated potatoes and mash with a spatula. Bake for approx. 15 minutes on medium heat/temperature or until a golden crust begins to form. Remove the potato growth for a moment, coat the pan with the rest of the butter and bake the other side for the same amount of time. Rösti can be combined with vegetables that can be grated, meat, bacon, cheese, etc. It must be taken into account that two-thirds must always be potatoes, otherwise the mixture is not compact enough.
