Savory English pie, also known as "pie" in English, has a rich history and is a recognizable part of British cuisine. The origin of the English pie dates back to the medieval period, in the 12th century.

English pies are a popular dish that can be prepared in different versions with different fillings. This particular version combines classic ingredients such as cheese, potatoes and onions into a harmonious dish that is both easy to prepare and extremely tasty.

Ingredients

  • 600 g of puff pastry
  • 1 potato
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 1 onion
  • 2 tablespoons of flour
  • 125 ml of milk
  • 50 ml of cooking cream
  • 150 g of mature cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1 egg

Directions

    Preparation of puff pastry:
  1. Cut out squares from the puff pastry.
  2. Place each one in a smaller aluminum container so that it covers the bottom and edge. We can also use a muffin tin.
  3. Pierce the bottom of the dough with a fork.
  4. Cover each pie with baking paper and sprinkle beans on it.
  5. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C for about 10 minutes, then remove from the oven and let the dough cool.
  6. Preparation of the filling:
  7. Cut the potatoes into small cubes, boil and strain.
  8. Melt the butter in a pan and fry the finely chopped onion.
  9. When the onion softens, add the flour and fry for another minute.
  10. Gradually pour in the milk, stirring all the time.
  11. When it starts to boil, add potatoes, grated cheese, mustard powder and cover with cooking cream.
  12. Season with salt and pepper, then mix everything well.
  13. Pour the filling into the prepared pies, brush the edge of the dough with a beaten egg.
  14. Assembly and baking:
  15. Roll out the other puff pastry, form round shapes and place them over the filling.
  16. Push slightly and cut off the excess.
  17. Pinch the edges of the dough with a fork, and make a hole in the middle with a knife.
  18. Coat the pie with a beaten egg.
  19. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C for about 25 minutes.
