At Auto Shanghai 2025, BYD unveiled the Ocean-S concept, an electric vehicle that hopes to combine sporty soul, family car practicality, and what could be described as "China's answer to the Tesla Model 3 Performance." Yes, it's clearly going to be fun.
Anyone who still thinks Chinese cars are boring clearly hasn't visited the Auto Shanghai 2025. BYD, one of the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturers, presented its latest concept there – Ocean-S. And this isn't just another generic electric car. No, the Ocean-S is like that surfer who effortlessly rides the biggest wave – and with style.
According to initial information, it is mid-range electric sedan, which with its shape stands alongside Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the upcoming Nio ET5It measures approximately in length. 4.8 meters, which means it is targeting the heart of the European market.
BYD Ocean-S Concept design: where waves meet sharpness
BYD made no effort to hide its inspiration from nature: the entire design language BYD Ocean-S Concept -a is deliberately fluid, with sharp lines reminiscent of a shark's fin. Narrow LED lights greet us at the front, while the rear is adorned with a full-width light strip, which is apparently considered a "must-have" these days. The whole thing looks modern, sporty and - which is rare - surprisingly confident.
Aerodynamics? Sure, the Ocean-S is said to have an extremely low drag coefficient under 0,23, which means better efficiency and less noise at higher speeds.
Technology: an electric heart beats under an elegant shell
Although BYD has not yet officially revealed all the numbers, we know that Ocean-S uses a new generation of their own electric platform e-Platform 4.0, which supports 800-volt architecture. This means fast charging: from 10 to 80 % in about 15 minutes.
In terms of performance, it is rumored that the Ocean-S in its most powerful version will have four-wheel drive and around 400 kW power (approx. 544 HP), which would put it in direct competition with the Tesla Model 3 Performance. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is said to be under 3.5 secondsYes, you read that right – this shark can be fast.
Interior: minimalist but luxurious
Interior photos have been officially revealed, and this is what BYD promises minimalist cabin, dominated by a large touchscreen and a high level of connectivity. Support for 5G, OTA upgrades, smart assistance systems and the extensive use of sustainable materials are practically a given.
BYD Ocean-S Concept: will this wave also reach Europe?
The most important question: will we see the Ocean-S on European roads? Early indications suggest that it will. BYD has significantly expanded its presence in the European market over the past year, and the Ocean-S could be a key player in the battle for mid-range electric buyers.
There is no official information yet on the price, but analysts predict that the Ocean-S could cost around 40,000 euros – that is, at the level of a better-equipped Tesla Model 3 or Hyundai Ioniq 6.
Conclusion: BYD strikes, and with style
Although it is still a concept, the BYD Ocean-S Concept clearly indicates that BYD does not want to play in the background anymore. The Ocean-S is confident, technologically advanced and surprisingly attractive in design. If the production version retains most of these features - and a price that will not cause a heart attack - then this shark can really stir up European waters.
Ocean-S? We're ready for this wave.
