NCAP BMW iX3 gets five stars from Euro NCAP: In the same, new and stricter test, the Chinese Zeekr 7GT beat it in three out of four categories

New safety rules – the first victim is German pride.

Euro NCAP has tightened the rules so much for 2026 that five stars are set to become a rare commodity again. The first to come under the NCAP knife were the BMW iX3 and the Chinese Zeekr 7GT. Both got full marks. But then something happened that they didn't have in the script in Munich.

NCAP BMW iX3?! Every three years, Euro NCAP revises its criteria. This year it went further than usual. The old system evaluated adult protection, child protection and assistance systems separately. The new protocol from 2026 tracks the entire crash story in order: Safe Driving, Collision Avoidance, Crash Protection and Post-crash Safety.

The point is simple. It's no longer enough for a car to withstand a crash well. It has to be able to prevent an accident, take care of its passengers in the aftermath, and be friendly to emergency responders. And because the iX3 and 7GT were the first cars to go through this tougher mill, they became the unofficial benchmark for everything that came after them.

BMW was rightly proud. Euro NCAP even called the iX3 perhaps the safest BMW ever. And then the same Euro NCAP also published the result of the Chinese guest.

A result that wasn't in the script in Munich – NCAP BMW iX3

Let's look at the numbers, because they don't lie. The BMW iX3 scored 73 percent in Safe Driving, 83 percent in Collision Avoidance, 86 percent in Crash Protection, and an excellent 95 percent in Post-Collision Safety.

Now the Chinese. The Zeekr 7GT in the Privilege AWD version scored 79 percent in Safe Driving, 89 percent in Collision Avoidance, 93 percent in Collision Protection, and also 95 percent in Post-Collision Safety.

Read it again. Zeekr was better in three of the four categories, and tied in the fourth. Both cars have five stars, but if we consider this test as a duel, the Chinese won the round. In a test invented by Europe. By rules written by Europe.

For the first time under the new, stricter criteria, Europe lost on its home turf, precisely in the safety test that is considered its global trademark.

Under the hood: how much car do you get for this money?

Technically, the two cars are more similar than one might think. Both rely on modern 800-volt architecture and both allow for such fast charging that a stop is more like a coffee than a lunch.

The BMW iX3 50 xDrive offers 345 kW (469 hp) and 645 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 210 km/h. It hides a battery with around 108.7 kWh of usable energy under the hood and promises a range of up to 805 kilometers according to the WLTP standard. It can be charged with up to 400 kW, from 10 to 80 percent in around 21 minutes. The scales show 2,285 kilograms, which is not exactly a lot, but is expected for a large electric SUV.

The Zeekr 7GT Privilege AWD plays rougher. It offers 475 kW (646 hp) and 710 Nm of torque, sprints to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and also reaches 210 km/h. Its battery has a capacity of 100 kWh (about 94 kWh usable) and can handle up to 558 kilometers according to WLTP. Charging is its strongest asset: the manufacturer lists a peak power of up to 480 kW and a charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 13 to 16 minutes, depending on the battery version. This is currently the fastest charging among production cars in Europe.

If you're looking for a more precise format for the duel, there's also the Zeekr 7X, an SUV that targets the same segment as the iX3 and Tesla's Model Y. In its most powerful version, it offers the same 475 kW (646 hp) and 710 Nm of torque, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, and its WLTP range reaches 615 kilometers. The 7X also received five stars from Euro NCAP. This pattern is no coincidence.

 

But be careful: who is the Chinese in this story?

And now the fine print that you won't hear anywhere else. The word "Chinese" is more complicated than it seems at Zeekr. Zeekr is a premium brand of the Geely group - the same Geely that also includes Volvo. Zeekr's design center is located in Gothenburg, Sweden, in the middle of Europe. The platform on which the 7GT is based is the result of joint development between Geely and Volvo.

So: the car is designed in Europe, designed in Europe and based on technology that the European Volvo helped develop. It is assembled in China, with European capital and a Swedish touch. The line between “them” and “us” is no longer a line, but a blur. And that should be Munich’s biggest concern. A competitor is no longer someone who copies – a competitor is someone who has hired the same people.

What did BMW do right? (Because this article is not an advertisement) – NCAP BMW iX3

Let's be honest. iX3 didn't lose because he was bad. He lost because his opponent was exceptional.

Euro NCAP praised BMW for something that many drivers will warmly welcome: the iX3 has retained physical buttons for lights, horn, hazard warning lights, turn signals and gear selector. In a world where manufacturers are moving everything to screens, this is almost a rebellion. The assessors also praised the speed limit recognition system, which correctly displayed the limit 97 percent of the time on a nearly 2,000-kilometer drive through Italy, France, Germany and Austria.

The best detail is hidden at 95 percent for Safety after a crash. The iX3 has recessed handles that extend themselves. Euro NCAP confirmed that these handles work even after all crashes and even in the event of a complete power failure. The passenger gets out, the rescuer gets in. This is safety that you don't see on paper until you need it. And here both cars were equally good.

Price and availability: this is where the battle really gets tough

Now comes the part that will raise your eyebrows. The BMW iX3 50 xDrive starts at €70,900 in Germany, after BMW raised the price by €2,000 just before its arrival, as demand was so high that the entire 2026 production run was sold out almost blind.

The Zeekr 7GT starts at 45,990 euros, and in Germany at 47,990 euros. The Zeekr 7X starts at around 52,990 euros. So: you'll pay significantly less for a car that scores higher in the European safety test. About as much less as a decent city car costs next to it.

Verdict: my feelings and thoughts

To whom is it BMW iX3 intended for? For those who want the brand with the blue and white propeller, the first model of the new era New Class and technology that BMW clearly took seriously. This is not just empty praise. This is the safest BMW ever and one of the fastest charging cars on the market. Whoever ordered it blindly made no mistake.

Who would I recommend it to? Anyone who thinks that a premium badge still automatically means technical superiority. That era has just ended. The Zeekr 7GT offers more power, faster acceleration, faster charging and higher safety ratings for significantly less money. But it's also fair to say that Zeekr is still young in Europe, its service network is still growing, and long-term reliability statistics are not yet available. Anyone who buys today is also buying a little confidence in advance.

But the core of the story remains. Europe wrote the strictest safety rules ever, used them for the first time, and lost on its own turf to a car from Geely. Not because of shortcuts, but because of the pure result. This is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason for serious reflection in Munich, Stuttgart and Wolfsburg. The Chinese are no longer knocking on Europe's doors. They have just shown that they can also build a lock better.

Europe wrote the new security rules. China was the first to read them to the last page.
