The Onvo L90 is not just another electric novelty from the Shanghai Motor Show. It is a statement. A statement that Nio is serious about taking over the family electric SUV market with its new sub-brand. In Europe too!

The Onvo brand, whose name comes from the English phrase “On Voyage”, is no coincidence. It is symbolic of the journey, progress and the future – which perfectly coincides with its role in No ecosystemOnvo was created as a more accessible branch of the luxury brand Nio, with a clear goal: to offer high technology and practical solutions to the middle market class.

The first model, the L60, entered as a stylish, sporty SUV for young buyers. The L90, as the second member of the family, focuses on spaciousness, comfort and usability, while maintaining the design sophistication and technical perfection we are accustomed to from the Nia.

A shape that conveys confidence

The Onvo L90 is much more restrained in appearance than the sporty L60. The design follows more square and powerful lines, emphasizing its status as a large SUV. The front end is adorned with a distinctive “shark nose”, which elegantly transitions into “Star Path Illumination” – an advanced pixel headlight system with an interactive welcome function.

The side silhouette with frameless doors, hidden handles and minimalist lines emphasizes elegance. Titanium color details and “floating” B and C pillars create a sense of prestige.

Dimensions? It measures 5,145 mm in length, 1,998 mm in width, and 1,676 or 1,786 mm in height, depending on the version. The wheelbase of 3,110 mm (60.4 % length ratio) means a huge interior.

A Frunk that will make you laugh (with joy)

The biggest hit? The 240-liter frunk – the largest of any model in China. It opens with a simple double tap on the lid, which is more technologically cool than funny. Plus, the rear trunk can hold seven 20-inch suitcases, even with all six seats occupied. The frunk adds two additional bags plus one smaller one. No other electric SUV can do that.

Capabilities that exceed expectations

The Onvo L90 uses the NT3.0 platform with a 900-volt architecture – similar to Porsche Taycan or Hyundai Ioniq 6, which means extremely fast charging and better efficiency. Two configurations are available:

  • RWD (rear drive): 340 kW (455 hp) electric motor
  • AWD (four-wheel drive): the total power of the two engines is 440 kW (590 hp)

The motor system is being developed by Nio's subsidiary XPT, which is considered one of the more innovative names in electromobility.

Battery options for each user profile

Customers will have a choice of battery options. The base model includes an 85 kWh battery, an upgrade from the L60 model’s 60 kWh. The batteries come from reputable suppliers: BYD, CATL and CALB.

Versions will be available with LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cells for greater endurance and with NMC (lithium nickel manganese cobalt) for greater energy density.

Suspension like riding on clouds

Comfort is ensured by an advanced air system with double wishbones at the front and multi-point suspension at the rear. No more bumping over city potholes or rocking on the highway – the Onvo L90 was designed with the comfort of all seven passengers in mind.

Conclusion: The Onvo L90 is big, smart, and ready for Europe

If you're looking for an electric SUV that combines space, performance, comfort and cutting-edge technology, then the Onvo L90 is worth serious consideration. While the Tesla Model X bets on futurism and the Mercedes EQS SUV on prestige, the Onvo L90 delivers something third – true utility without excessive pomp.

Prices are not yet known, but if they follow Onvo's philosophy, we can expect aggressive positioning - maybe in the range of 45,000 to 55,000 euros, once it is in the EU. Which would mean a real revolution in the European market.

And one more thing: if the Onvo L80, coming at the end of the year, continues in this direction, then competing brands can get ready. The battle for the mid-range electric SUV class is just beginning. And Onvo just flexed its muscles.
